When you first attend a LOV Inc. event, you will be asked to sign your agreement to these policies.
Volunteer & Staff Roles at Events
LOV Inc. is powered by families, friends, and a tiny staff. Some events are run entirely by volunteers. What can volunteers and staff do? Here’s a partial list.
Volunteers can help participants:
- Get to know people
- Learn new activities
- Problem-solve, fill out a form, or start a coat zipper
- Regain emotional control by taking a deep breath
- Wait for a ride
- Identify possible carpool matches
- Provide minor first aid—such as a band-aid (if anybody has one)
- Call an emergency contact
- Call 911
Volunteers cannot:
- Make sure the participant arrives or stays at the event
- Handle the participant’s money
- Help with going to the bathroom or other personal care
- Provide much physical help with activities
- Administer medication or complicated first aid
- Administer a behavioral program
- Drive participants home
- Vouch for someone else’s driving record
How families and supporters help
Fill out the emergency contact card (provided)–and help make sure the participant carries it to all LOV Inc. get-togethers.
Attend a few events with the participant to determine if he or she should attend independently. Join in! Get to know other parents or friends, help with activities, or bring treats. Use good judgment, as usual, in selecting activities, companions, and supports needed. Give special consideration to transportation and what the participant will do before and after an event.
We encourage families and participants to connect and spend time together outside of LOV Inc. activities. Many people say that the most powerful part of LOV Inc. is the development of real friendships. However, it’s important to know that LOV Inc. does not run background checks on members, so use the same caution you would with any community group. Agreements
I understand these policies and will follow them at LOV Inc. events. Further, LOV Inc. staff and volunteers have permission to call 911 for the participant if they deem it necessary.
I understand that my participation and/or involvement in LOV Inc. activities carries with it the potential for certain risks, some of which may not be reasonably foreseeable. I further acknowledge that these risks could cause me, or others around me, harm, including, but not limited to, bodily injury, damage to property, emotional distress, or death. I am a willing participant in LOV Inc.
By signing this agreement, I agree to release, indemnify, and hold harmless LOV Inc. as well as all its employees, volunteers, representatives, etc. from all losses, claims, theft, demands, liabilities, causes of action, or expenses, known or unknown, arising out of my participation in LOV Inc. activities.
